Roofing, cladding and structural products manufacturer
Steadmans has supplied the key components to build a total
of 58 modular buildings for this year’s Bahrain Air Show.
The buildings were constructed at the country’s Sakhir Air
Base, which is close to the Royal Palace and next to the new
Grand Prix race track. |
 |
| The
£27m project came about when the Royal Family of Bahrain
visited the 2008 Farnborough and 2009 Paris Air Shows and
was extremely impressed by a modular structure used at both
events by US aircraft manufacturer Textron. |
|
The Textron building was created
by a partnership comprising Lea International, a
Henley-on-Thames design consultancy specialising in
exhibitions worldwide, Steadmans of Carlisle and Leeds-based
Capital Steel Buildings distributor Town & Country Bespoke
Buildings. |
|
This same team was commissioned
by the Royal Family to design, import and erect the 58
buildings which included a restaurant, media centre,
mezzanine viewing platforms, show entrance and medical
centre. The main structure, which housed the Royal Pavilion
and 42 business units, was over half a kilometre long. |
|
Following approval of the
building’s design, Steadmans manufactured all the structural
components for the framework which included 24,500 lin
metres of top hat purlin sections and 27,000 metres of cold
rolled ‘C’ Sections. |
|
This was followed by the roofing
and cladding elements which comprised 16,000 metres of 60mm
thick Steadmans AS35/1000 insulated roof and wall panels,
7,000 metres of Steadmans AS24 profiled roof and wall sheets
and over 12,000 metres of flashings plus all associated
fixings. All roof and wall panels, flashings and fixings
were Mercury coloured using Corus Prisma material. |
|
The project was completed in
just four months and involved hiring four jumbo jets which
each transported 116 tonnes of materials and equipment to
Bahrain. This was followed by more than 100 sea freight
containers. |
|
Ron Cousins, director, Town &
Country Bespoke Buildings, said: “It really was a project of
massive proportions for us so we needed to ensure that we
worked effectively as a partnership from inception to
completion. |
|
“Steadmans were superb
throughout providing us with quality products, intelligent
advice and outstanding technical support. The Royal Family
was so impressed with the project that they have
subsequently requested costs for a number of further
buildings.” |
