| In
today’s global marketplace where products are readily
available from all over the world, it’s easy for house
builders to forget the benefits of buying materials from
suppliers in the same country – or even the same region.
However, one forward thinking Yorkshire company is currently
reaping the rewards of ‘keeping it local’. |
 |
|
Hoveden Homes, part of Hoveden
Builders Limited, has recently constructed a development of
20 three, four and five bedroom homes at Knedlington Walk in
Howden, near Goole. In order to meet its roofing needs, the
family-owned business could have turned to a number of
manufacturers in various national and international
locations. But instead, it recognised it was more beneficial
to use a manufacturer located right on its doorstep. |
|
Specifically, the company turned
to one of the UK’s leading roof tile producers, Sandtoft,
who have a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility located
less than 15 miles away from the development in Broomfleet.
|
|
Doing so, meant associated lorry
movements were kept to a minimum bringing with it a
reduction in vehicle emissions and a reduced carbon
footprint. It also allowed Hoveden to create roofscapes more
sympathetic to the surrounding area. The tiles specified
would be created with locally extracted clay which Sandtoft
has been using to produce tiles for the local vernacular for
over a century. |
|
John Winter, Director of Hoveden
Builders Limited, explains: “Over the last 30 years, Hoveden
Homes has gained an enviable reputation for building
high-quality homes where there is a focus on attention to
detail. Choosing to use tiles produced by a local
manufacturer using local materials is all part of this. It
has allowed us to build properties with roofs that blend
seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.” |
|
Hoveden Homes used two Sandtoft
tiles for its development at Knedlington Walk. The first was
Olympus - a new generation tile which provides all the
benefits of a natural clay roof at an affordable price
thanks to its innovative design. Olympus’ large format,
which gives coverage of just 10.2 tiles per square metre,
coupled with an easy to lay open gauge actually allows it to
deliver installation times and costs to rival concrete
products. |
|
The other Sandtoft tile used was
Cassius. Also a new generation clay tile, Cassius offers the
same fixing efficiencies as Olympus but with another notable
advantage. As Hoveden Homes discovered, using the tile in an
Antique Slate colour let house builders create slate
appearance roofs at a fraction of slate’s price. Not only is
the material less expensive, but roof installations are
quicker and less material intensive. Unlike slate, Cassius
does not need to be double lapped or holed or sorted
on-site. |
|
Speaking of Sandtoft’s
involvement at the development, the company’s sales and
marketing director, Nick Oldridge, said: “We are delighted
to be playing a part in Hoveden Homes’ Knedlington Walk
development and especially considering it illustrates a
number of important points about our offer to the home
builder. Not only can we help them create roofs that
compliment the local environment, but we can also save them
money without any compromise in either quality or
aesthetics.” |
