As Nick Oldridge, Sales and Marketing Director of Sandtoft Roof Tiles commented: “The Built in Quality Awards are a fantastic opportunity to support the hard work and dedication of the region’s construction companies. As a manufacturer in the region, we understand the importance of this. It was great to be part of such a celebration and to see the very high standards of projects nominated and awarded at the ceremony.”
Sandtoft sponsored the New Dwellings (Volume) and Domestic Extension categories both of which enjoyed an excellent number of entries resulting in a very high calibre shortlist.
Derek Wright Design (Hull) Limited received the award for best New Dwelling (Volume) for its development in Wombwell, Hull. The project was developed on a Brownfield site and consists of 58 apartments and houses with associated parking. More importantly, the project forms part of a new link road which is a significant element in the regeneration plan for the area. The other nominated projects in this category included Hawson Street in Barnsley for Gladedale Homes and a development on Barnsley Road in Sheffield for Jaguar Estates.
The winner of the Domestic Extension award is Rhys Taylor for his small first floor extension in Moorgate, Rotherham. This winning extension was built into an existing external recess of a two storey stone built structure believed to be 200-300 years old. The work has been sympathetically constructed with like-for-like materials and an excellent standard of workmanship. The extension has provided additional accommodation which has increased the value of the dwelling. Other nominees in this category included, Chartwell Builders for its extension on 10 Hall Royd Lane in Barnsley and Mark Landrick for his sensitive extension to the dwelling at Thorpe Salvin, Rotherham.
Attending the glittering occasion were representatives from all the shortlisted companies and sponsors, together with teams from the regions’ Local Authority Building Control departments, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, and guest speaker and comedian, Brian Newbold. The event was held on Thursday 6th March 2008, at Tankersley Manor Hotel, Barnsley.
Event chair of the South Yorkshire and Humber Built in Quality Awards, Paul Cooper concluded: “As well as rewarding these fantastic projects and developing awareness of Local Authority Building Control, we have raised £1,441 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. We are already looking for potential nominees for next year’s event and hope that it will be just as successful as this year, if not more so.”
