Green and brown roofing systems from specialists Blackdown
Horticultural Consultants of Somerset, have contributed to
an ecological landscape scheme at a striking new development
of Student Apartments in Falmouth. |
|
Built on a foundation of
horticultural expertise, Blackdown were chosen to work with
Landscape Architect Charlotte Rathbone of the Rathbone
Partnership in Devon, helping to refine her original
planting design, ensuring that it would survive the dry,
windy conditions of the elevated coastal position. |
|
Designed to reduce the visual
impact of the building in relation to the nearby wooded
cliffs and stunning overhead views, Blackdown’s installation
comprised 518m˛ of bio-diverse brown roof and 220m˛ of
intensive green roof shrub planting and pebble border.
|
|
The bio-diverse element was
applied as a dry grassland wildflower mix which will
flourish naturally through germination and seed growth,
providing new habitat for invertebrates and nesting birds.
The intensive shrubs provide a mix of deciduous and
evergreen species to provide colour throughout the year,
whilst assisting with rainwater run-off and providing
natural insulation for the building. |
|
Brown and green roofs both offer
environmentally relevant design solutions and are often
specified alongside each other to provide variance across a
large roof area. |
|
