| The
Diamond Hall at the University of Ulster, Coleraine is used
for graduations, exams and large functions. It is at the
centre of the campus and prominent in the surrounding area.
Samuel Stevenson Architects were asked to design a new
façade that would raise the building image. The building
users have been extremely complimentary on the changes.
Given a relatively modest budget this important university
building has gained a vibrant, modern public image and has
been awarded the prestigious 2011 Wood Award for the best
Conversation/Restoration project. |

|
The building is situated in a
very exposed location and its original patent glazed and
Galbestos façade cladding had reached the end of its useful
life. The thermal performance was poor and internally there
was a lot of glare. An insulated StrongBak™ structural
framing system specially designed and fabricated by
Architectural Profiles Limited (APL) for this project
provided a fast and cost efficient solution. The main
contractors were Geda Construction and the contract was
completed in 33 weeks at a cost of £2.3 million. |
|
The intricate design of the
existing building demanded very detailed design of the
StrongBak™ which needed to accommodate the appropriate
thickness of insulation before a timber and clay tile
rainscreen system were attached to it. The side elevations
which are 80m long are predominantly clad in western red
cedar which will in time turn silver. |

Architectural Profiles Limited
provides a range of systems and products offering a wealth
of cost saving construction and design options for the

closely with all clients/architects at design stage to
ensure the most cost efficient solution is always provided
to meet, or exceed, the specified performance criteria. |
